A team from Army Training Command (ATRAC), led by Deputy Commander, ATRAC, Colonel Ibrahim Abubakari Salifu-Wumbei, delivered a presentation on the newly introduced Infantry Soldier Career Training Policy (ISCTP) as part of the pre-implementation phase of the plan at the Army Peace Operations Training School (APOTS), Bundase, on Thursday 26 February 2026.
The session brought together troops preparing to be deployed with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) (GHANBATT 5), the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG GHANCOY 10), and the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB GHANCOY 5).
Col Salifu-Wumbei, in his opening remarks, explained that the policy establishes a structured four-level career progression system for infantry soldiers, beginning with foundational training and advancing to senior leadership preparation. He stated that Level 1 focuses on building core infantry competencies, including weapon handling, fieldcraft, and basic tactical skills, and that these must be completed before progression.
Level 2 introduces career development and specialised courses, while Level 3 prepares soldiers for instructional and supervisory roles, including platoon sergeant appointments. Level 4, he noted, concentrates on leadership, command, and administrative responsibilities, with stricter qualification requirements.
The Deputy Commander ATRAC further outlined a phased implementation plan. Phase 1, currently underway, focuses on preparation, stakeholder engagement, resource assessment and the standardisation of course content to ensure uniform training across all commands. Phase 2 will decentralise Levels 1 and 2 training to formation commands, while retaining centralised control of Levels 3 and 4 at designated training institutions. Phase 3 will consolidate lessons learned, conduct impact assessments and institutionalise best practices, with certification and records updated to support promotion decisions.
Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Addai Tweneboah-Kodua, in his presentation on the same policy, emphasised the need to streamline career progression and address training backlogs within the Army. He underscored that the new framework gives soldiers clearer control over their professional development and strengthens operational readiness across the force. Both speakers encouraged participants to study the policy carefully, ask relevant questions and prepare for its full rollout later this year.
Also present at the ceremony were the Commander of the Army Peace Operations Training School, Col Reuben Dela Klutse, the Commanding Officer of UNISFA GHANBATT 5, Lt Col Prince Nadom, the Officer Commanding ESSMGB, Lt Col Benjamin Danful, Major Mershack Acquaye, Army Headquarters Representative, and other senior officers.
