The country representative of the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security, Maj Gen William Omane Agyekum (Rtd) has paid a familiarisation visit to Headquarters Southern Command on Thursday 31 July 2025. The visit forms part of efforts by the Dallaire Institute to establish training relations with Southern Command and Units in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), to equip personnel with knowledge on how to handle and protect children in war situations.
Gen Omane Agyekum indicated that Dallaire Institute is working closely with 107 countries including Ghana, that have endorsed the Vancouver principles, to commit to providing their military and police personnel with training on how to prevent child recruitment and how to interact with child soldiers when they encounter them in war situations.
He indicated that resource persons and experts from the institute are available to teach topics on the subject to troops, while training the trainer courses are also being facilitated to identify military and police personnel who would teach the courses locally.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, Brig Gen Isaac Nicholas Paintsil expressed optimism about the impact the training package proposed by Dallaire Institute would have on the efficiency of troops on Child Protection in conflict situations. He pledged that Command would incorporate topics from the Institute into the various training programmes for all courses undertaken by units under his Command.
