Participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 18 from the National Institute of Security Studies, Nigeria, visited the Ghana Army Headquarters for a Strategic Security Study Tour on Monday, 16 June 2025, at Burma Camp.
The delegation, led by Mr Bolarinwa Rafin Adekunle, paid a courtesy call to the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu. The COAS warmly welcomed the delegation and praised the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Nigeria, highlighting the common training activities shared by both armies.
He emphasized the importance of their study tour on security management concerning non-state actors, noting that these issues play a critical role in the geopolitical landscape. Major General Gbetanu stressed that their research is vital, as non-state actors influence society both positively and negatively, and wished the delegation a fruitful study tour for the benefit of all.
Chief Staff Officer (CSO) at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Loyd Atror, in his welcome remarks at the Hall of Generals expressed his enthusiasm about the delegation’s area of study, which addresses ongoing challenges in the sub-region. He emphasized that through collaboration, solutions can be found to mitigate these issues. Brigadier General Atror welcomed the participants from the National Institute of Defence Studies, Nigeria, and expressed hope that the study would yield benefits for both Ghana and Nigeria.
General Staff Officer Grade 1 (Operations) at the Army Headquarters, Lieutenant Colonel LF Sarpong, delivered a presentation titled “Collaborative Efforts between Ghana Army and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Peacebuilding.” His presentation covered the Ghana Army’s cooperation with CSOs in internal security operations, peaceful elections, democratic transitions, joint training, early warning systems, conflict mediation, challenges to collaboration, and potential ways to strengthen partnerships in peacebuilding.
In his remarks, Mr. Bolarinwa Rafin Adekunle expressed gratitude to the Ghana Army High Command for the robust and rewarding interaction. He acknowledged the importance of state dominance and the need for external partnerships to leverage positive influences and address negative threats to stability and development. Confident that the tour would enrich their study, he pledged that the delegation would produce reports including findings, recommendations, and implementation strategies beneficial to both Nigeria and Ghana.
As a mark of courtesy, the COAS presented Mr. Adekunle with a customized plaque and a Ghana Army Kente Stole. In return, Mr. Adekunle presented plaques and a book to the COAS and the CSO at the Army Headquarters.
