The Ghana Army School of Ammunition and Explosive (GASAE) in collaboration with facilitators from UK EOD Regiments known as Short-Term Training Teams (STTT), held a Closing Ceremony for the Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) Basic and Assistant Course 1/25 at Michel Camp on Thursday, 12 June 2025. This marked the conclusion of a comprehensive 6-week intensive training program focused on IEDD operations.
The central aim of this course was to bolster the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) capabilities, particularly in countering the threat posed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), thereby equipping personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle and dispose of these devices safely and effectively.
The Commander Ghana Army School of Ammunition and Explosive (GASAE), Colonel Francis Laapo acknowledged the ongoing collaboration with the British Government. He emphasized the escalating threat of terrorism in Africa and the critical need for enhanced training in IEDD to fortify national security. Colonel Laapo pointed out that while equipment provisions are in place, there is a pressing need for infrastructure development. He noted that the military high command is actively working to establish adequate facilities to support the School's operations at Michel Camp.
Furthermore, Colonel Laapo announced plans for the integration of a canine training unit into the School to assist with IEDD operations, underscoring the multifaceted approach to tackling the challenges posed by explosive threats. He expressed gratitude for the successful completion of the course, despite the obstacles encountered, and commended all participants for their commitment to excellence.
The Assistant British Attaché, at the British High Commission in Ghana, Staff Sergeant Dorian John highlighted the successful partnership between Ghana and the United Kingdom in the domain of Counter Explosive Ordnance. He expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved, particularly through the advancements witnessed at GASAE.
Staff Sergeant Dorian John commended both the Ghana Army and the participants for their dedication and sacrifices, encouraging those who may not have excelled to view this experience as an opportunity for growth and to challenge themselves further, with the continued support of GASAE instructors.
Awards were presented to exceptional students who demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the course. Private Owusu Ansah Julius earned recognition for Best in Academics, while Private Owusu Acheampong Ebenezer excelled in practical applications, receiving the Best in Practical award.
The title of Overall Best Student was awarded to Private Awunu Precious Aseye Adzo. Additionally, three instructors who exhibited exceptional dedication and instructional excellence were recognized, including Lance Corporal Asiedu Ebenezer, Lance Corporal Karikari Enock, and Sergeant Owusu-Ahiaw Collins.
