A delegation from the Tanzania Peoples Defence Force (TPDF), led by Commodore Hamisi Msafiri Mtalika, the Tanzania Commissioner for Estate Management and Building at the Ministry of Defence and National Service, visited the Ghana Army Headquarters at Burma Camp on Friday, 11 July 2025, for a benchmarking exercise.
The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, who warmly welcomed them. Major General Gbetanu praised the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Tanzania, highlighting the shared training activities between the two armies. He emphasized the importance of the visit in strengthening their relationship and fostering greater engagement.
He also noted the significance of the benchmarking exercise focused on career planning and progression for officers and soldiers. COAS further assured the delegation that his team was fully prepared to share their knowledge and wished them a fruitful and enjoyable stay in Ghana.
Chief Staff Officer (CSO) at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Lloyd Atror, expressed his enthusiasm during his welcome remarks at the Hall of Generals. He welcomed the TPDF delegation and expressed confidence that the benchmarking exercise would help identify key differences and best practices in career development and succession planning within the Ghana Army .
The Army Secretary (ASEC), Colonel William Ohemeng, and Major Elizabeth Nkrumah, GSO 11 Administration, delivered a detailed presentation titled “Career Development and Succession Plan for Officers and Soldiers.” The presentation outlined how the Ghana Army plans and manages the careers of its personnel in accordance with existing regulations.
Topics covered included the organizational structure of the Ghana Army, career planning and progression, terms of service, employment structure, local and overseas training and courses, promotions, releases, and retirement procedures.
In his remarks, Commodore Hamisi Msafiri Mtalika expressed gratitude to the Ghana Army High Command and staff for their efforts and time in facilitating the benchmarking exercise.
He acknowledged the valuable insights gained, which would help both forces share ideas and continue benchmarking to adopt best practices. He also praised the engaging and informative interaction, which clarified many important aspects of career development.
As a mark of courtesy, the COAS presented Commodore Mtalika with a customized plaque and a Ghana Army Kente Stole. In return, Commodore Mtalika presented a plaque to the Ghana Army leadership as a token of appreciation for their warm hospitality and cooperation.
