Us Embassy Delegation Pays Courtesy Call on COAS

A delegation from the US Embassy’s Office of Security Cooperation (Civil Affairs), led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Corbitt, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, at the Army Headquarters on Wednesday, 23 July 2025.

The visit aimed to familiarize the delegation with the COAS and to strengthen security coordination by aligning efforts with the priorities of the Ghana Army.

Lieutenant Colonel Corbitt and his Civil Affairs team outlined their key supportive roles during high-priority events such as the African Land Forces Summit and Exercise AFRICAN LION 25, emphasizing their long-term commitment to joint readiness and interoperability.

The team also requested approval to support future Ghana Army-led training programs in border security, Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), and Medical Civic Action Programs (MEDCAPs) in the Western, Volta, and Northern regions. He further expressed eagerness for increased collaboration to enhance regional security, civil-military cooperation and bilateral relations.

Major General Gbetanu in response warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed his appreciation for their visit. He highlighted two key issues: securing support for the establishment of engineer regiments in the Northern, Volta, and Western regions, and acquiring more drones to enhance Ghana Army operations.

COAS also discussed traditional exercises such as TIGER’S PATH, THUNDERBOLT, FIRE BLAST, and the Drill Competition which are scheduled on the Army calendar to foster cohesion and esprit de corps among personnel.

As a token of appreciation, the COAS presented Lieutenant Colonel Corbitt with a Command Coin to honour the visit. In return, Lieutenant Colonel Corbitt presented the COAS with a badge.

Also present at the meeting were Chief Staff Officer at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Lloyd Atror, Civil Affairs Team Leader at the US Embassy OSC, Captain Peter Darko Afari, and other members of the Civil Affairs team.
