The 2nd Battalion of Infantry (2 Bn) of the Ghana Army commemorated the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Myohaung and the Drumhead Service on 23 January 2026 at the Apambire Square, 2 Bn, Takoradi. The event, popularly known as “Myohaung Day Parade”, is held annually in remembrance of the Battle of Myohaung to honour the gallant West African servicemen who lost their lives on 23 January 1945 during World War 11 in Burma.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Guest of Honour, Brigadier General Mike Akpatsu (Rtd), noted that in honouring past heroes, veterans must never be forgotten. He said they formed an integral part of Ghana’s national security fabric and, through their battle-tested insights, informed councils, training, and vigilance.
These initiatives bolster the country’s defence against modern threats. He emphasised the need to integrate veterans into security policy discussions and local peacekeeping efforts, as this would help harness their expertise to build a more resilient nation for a safer future.
Brigadier General Mike Akpatsu (Rtd) noted that the day was also a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers and other security personnel who work tirelessly to safeguard the nation's peace and stability. He commended and encouraged them to continue working hard to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism.
He applauded the families of both serving and retired men and women, whom he noted were the silent backbone of the Ghana Armed Forces, and urged them to continue to stand by their spouses, offering emotional support, maintaining strong family bonds, and creating a nurturing home environment.
He recalled that the name of the 2 Battalion of Infantry, ‘The Great Second’, which emerged from victory and excellence, had great historic significance, as 2BN won every military competition during his time of service. He urged the Unit's soldiers to continue the tradition of success and triumph.
