Bring Back the Trophy, COAS Challenges Ghana Army Volleyball Team

Story by Eunice Botchway

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General (Maj Gen) Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has challenged the Ghana Army men’s volleyball team to bring home the trophy from the 47th African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Men’s Club Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.

He issued the challenge during a meeting with the team at the BK Akafia Transit Lodge, Arakan Barracks, Burma Camp, on Monday 20 April 2026, ahead of their departure for Rwanda. Maj Gen Gbetanu emphasised the importance of the competition, framing it as a military mission rather than merely a sporting event. He described it as a project demanding full commitment, noting that the team represents the Ghana Army, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), and the nation.

He urged the players to prepare thoroughly and uphold integrity and discipline, in keeping with Rwanda’s reputation for being highly structured. He also encouraged them to avoid conduct that could bring the team into disrepute, given the support they had received from various agencies. The COAS further called on the team to promote Ghana positively and made a cash donation towards administrative costs, describing it as an initial gesture ahead of greater rewards upon victory.

The Deputy Chief Staff Officer for Operations and Training at Army Headquarters, Brigadier General William Archibald Kwabiah, expressed heartfelt thanks for the COAS’s support throughout the team’s preparations and vowed that the team would do its best.

Also present were Chief G7, Colonel Issahaku Beyolten Mohammed, G7 branch staff officers, a representative of the Ghana Volleyball Federation, Madam Emmanuella Pokuah Asamoah, and members of the Ghana Army women’s volleyball team.
