Army Wives Association Holds Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Exercise

The Army Wives Association (AWA) has organised a breast cancer awareness and screening exercise at the New Aggrey Hall of the 49 Engineers Regiment in Burma Camp on Sunday, 19 October 2025.The programme, held in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aimed to educate members of the association on breast health and the importance of regular medical check-ups.In his welcome address, the Commander of the 49 Engineers Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Harrison Dadzie, expressed appreciation to the Army Wives for their initiative and encouraged all participants to take full advantage of the screening opportunity.The President of the Army Wives Association and wife of the Chief of the Army Staff, Mrs. Patience Dzifa Adeti-Gbetanu, commended the medical team from the 37 Military Hospital’s Public Health Department for their support. She also lauded the wives for their active participation and urged them to prioritise routine medical check-ups rather than waiting until illness occurs.Speaking at the event, the Gender Advisor to the Chief of the Army Staff, Colonel Rahinatu Sledge Alando, dispelled the misconception that breast cancer affects only women. She emphasised that men can also develop the disease and encouraged the wives to motivate their husbands to take part in screenings during the awareness month.A health talk was delivered by Madam Adisa Sumani, Principal Nursing Officer from the 37 Military Hospital, on the topic “Breast Cancer Awareness, Risk Factors, Prevention and Early Detection.” She educated participants on how to perform self-examinations, recognise early warning signs, and seek prompt medical attention for effective management.The event formed part of ongoing efforts by the Army Wives Association to promote health education and preventive healthcare among military families.
