Canadian Defence Attaché Meets COAS to Strengthen Training Ties

The Canadian Defence Attaché to Ghana, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Palmer, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, at Army Headquarters on Thursday 22 January 2026.During the meeting, Lt Col Palmer highlighted an upcoming UN Engagement Platoon Training Course and proposed incorporating it into future training packages for deployments.

He noted that the Elsie Initiative partially funds the course, and outlined plans by the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security to expand its programmes beyond UN operations by integrating selected modules into routine Army training courses.

Lt Col Palmer expressed Canada’s appreciation for the GAF's collaboration in combating illegal mining. He further commended local efforts to develop drone technology and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to ongoing technological partnerships.

In response, the COAS commended the enduring collaboration between the two forces, describing it as vital to capacity building over the years.

He welcomed the inclusion of UN Engagement Platoon Training in pre-deployment training and pledged to deepen cooperation in personnel development and technological innovation.
