The Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kweku Gbetanu, accompanied by members of the Medal Day delegation, paid courtesy calls on key authorities during a visit to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) from 2 to 7 March 2026.
The visit was part of activities for a joint Medal Presentation Parade and the celebration of Ghana’s 69th Independence Day with personnel from Ghana Battalion 4 (GHANBATT 4) and Ghana Level II Hospital 4 (GHANMED 4). During the visit, Major General Gbetanu met with the Chief Administrator of Abyei, the Paramount Chief, and the UNISFA Mission Leadership Team, expressing appreciation for their ongoing cooperation and support to Ghanaian peacekeepers operating in the mission area.
He also met with the UNISFA Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Ganesh Kumar Shrestha, to discuss operational matters concerning Ghanaian personnel and the overall security situation within the mission area.
The delegation further visited the GHANMED 4 camp and the Company Operating Bases of GHANBATT 4, where facilities and vehicles were inspected.
During the visit, Major General Gbetanu held a durbar with personnel of GHANBATT 4, GHANMED 4, Ghanaian Staff Officers, and Ghana Military Observers serving within the mission. He praised their professionalism, discipline, and dedication to duty, and encouraged them to continue maintaining the esteemed reputation of the Ghana Armed Forces in United Nations peacekeeping operations.
Members of the delegation included the Director General (DG) Ghana Armed Forces Legal Affairs, Brigadier General (Brig Gen ) Charles Gbekle, DG International Peace Support Operations, Brig Gen Salifu, Director and Service Public Relations Officer, Ghana Navy, Naval Captain Andy La-Anyani, a representative of the Veterans Association of Ghana, Group Captain Peter Dogbe (Rtd) and the Army Sergeant Major, Senior Warrant Officer Class II Dogbatse Godson.
