Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Maj Gen Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu on Thursday 05 June 2025, paid a day’s working visit to the Headquarters Southern Command, Kpeshie Ridge, Teshie. The visit formed part of his familiarization tour of Army Commands, Formations and Units, to ascertain the Administrative, Operational and Logistical efficiency of the army, in fulfilment of its mission to protect the territorial land integrity of the country. The visit was also used to introduce himself to personnel of the Command as the new Army Chief and also obtain actual information of deployments, tasks and activities of the Command, as well as determine developments and challenges at the command level, to inform his operational decisions.
Maj Gen LK Gbetanu was met on arrival at the Command Headquarters by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, Brig Gen Isaac Nicholas Paintsil, where he inspected a Guard of Honour mounted for him. He was then ushered into the Command Operations room for a thorough brief on the Administrative, Operational and Logistics state of the Command by the Command Logistics Officer, Col Franklin Gyamerah-Amoako and the Command Operations Officer, Col Lawrence Agbedoawu.
There was also a brief by the Commanding Officer (CO) 81 Signal Regiment, Lt Col Mubarrak Ramadan on the Operational state of the Unit, colocated with the Headquarters Southern Command.
COAS was taken on a brief tour of the camp, after which he held an interactive durbar with troops of the Command, where he outlined his vision for the Army; which is ‘To maintain a motivated Army grounded on core military values, enabled by adaptive technologies and platforms capable of projecting decisive land power as part of the Ghana Armed Forces’.Gen Gbetanu indicated that under his leadership, the Army would revive and introduce some interventions, including Basic Fitness Test (BFT), Exercise Tigers Path, Starlight Stretch, Thunderbolt and Fire Blast, to enhance esprit de corps and cohesion among troops.
He reiterated that the Army would go back to the basics to instill the core military values, by revisiting the concepts, procedures, rules and regulations, to reset the Army.
He again cautioned troops to desist from illegal unauthorized operations and recruitment fraud, and announced that the military Hierarchy has decided to outrightly dismiss any soldier found culpable of recruitment fraud.
The COAS was accompanied on the visit by a high-powered delegation of Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters.
