The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Gbetanu and a four-member delegation from the General and Army Headquarters have undertaken a 4-day working visit to the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT 92) serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The visit, which took place from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 November 2025, was aimed at boosting troop morale, assessing operational and logistical readiness of the Battalion, as well as strengthening Ghana’s longstanding contribution to global peacekeeping.
Upon arrival at Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut, the COAS and the delegation were received by Ghana’s Honorary Consul to Lebanon His Excellency Ali Samih Jafaar, together with the Contingent Commander, Colonel Michael Afreh Mfum, the Commanding Officer, Lt Col Evans Yaw Mensah Komedjah and other senior officers of the Battalion serving with UNIFIL.
On Friday, 7 November, the COAS was accorded a Guard of Honour at the Kofi Annan Square within United Nations Position (UNP) 5-66, the GHANBATT Headquarters, marking the formal commencement of his tour. A central briefing was held at Kpeto Hall, where the COAS was updated on the Battalion’s operations, challenges, and achievements within the mission area. This was followed by a durbar with all ranks, providing an opportunity for open interaction between the troops and the COAS.
Major General Gbetanu later visited several UNPs, including UNP 5-42 (Volta Camp) and UNP 5-22 (Beposo Camp) to engage directly with personnel deployed at the frontlines. He continued his operational tour to other forward bases, including UNP 1-21(Adehye Camp) and UNP 1-0A (Adepa Fie).
The COAS also paid courtesy calls on the Head of Mission and Force Commander (HoM/FC), Maj Gen Diodato Abagnara at UNIFIL Headquarters in Naqoura, as well as the Sector West Commander, Brigadier General David Colussi in Shama. Discussions centered on Ghana’s vital role in UNIFIL and the commitment of GHANBATT to maintaining peace in Lebanon.
The visit concluded on Sunday, 9 November 2025, with a meeting with the Honorary Consul of Ghana in Beirut before the COAS departed for Accra. Throughout the visit, the Chief of the Army Staff commended GHANBATT 92 for their professionalism, discipline, and dedication to duty, urging the troops to continue upholding Ghana’s reputation as a leading contributor to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.
The members of the delegation were Ghana’s Defence Attache to Cairo, Air Commodore Reginald Yaw Cole, Deputy Director-General International Peace Support Operations (DDG IPSO), Col Lawrence Owusu Brobbey, the Chief G3 (Peace Support Operations) Col Ernest Tahiru Nanbigne and the Director Army Religious Affairs (DARA), Col Francis Agyeman.
