GCB Bank PLC Sponsors Ghana Army Volleyball Team

Story By Eunice Botchway

A 12-member delegation from GCB Bank PLC Burma Camp branch, led by the Executive Head of Retail Banking, Mr Sina Kamagate, has donated $20,000 to the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, on Wednesday 15 April 2026, at the Army Headquarters.

Receiving the donation, Maj Gen Gbetanu welcomed the delegation and expressed heartfelt appreciation to the bank for responding to their call to sponsor the Ghana Army Volleyball Team. He also recalled GCB Bank’s generosity last year during the introduction of traditional jungle training exercises, which contributed to the successful organisation of the exercise.

He noted that the team has already won the Greater Accra Volleyball League, the Super Cup, and the African Volleyball Confederation competition this year, and will now represent Ghana in Rwanda. He expressed confidence that they would perform well and that they would present the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the Ghana Army, and GCB Bank PLC as sponsors.

Mr Kamagate said the gesture was in response to the Army’s request for sponsorship ahead of the Rwanda competition. He added that being approached by the Army underscored the high regard the institution holds for the bank. He stressed that the ability of businesses to operate safely depends on the strength and well-being of the Armed Forces, and that the bank prioritises these initiatives.

He highlighted that the GAF are among the institutions that support the bank’s business, and therefore, GCB is duty-bound to offer support in return. He further pledged GCB Bank PLC-branded jerseys for the team, noting that the GCB brand is associated with victory and, coupled with the team’s form, should help bring the trophy home.

Mr Kamagate also appealed for further business opportunities between the two parties and encouraged personnel to serve as ambassadors for the bank’s new “Salary Advance” product. The product, dedicated to GAF personnel, allows them to access up to 80% of their salary at any time. He further assured COAS of the bank’s continued support for the Ghana Army.
