Gender Perspective in Combat Operations Course Commences in Burma Camp

Chief G7 Training at Army Headquarters, Colonel Gabriel Mawuli Agboado, officially declared the commencement of the Gender Perspective in Combat Operations Course at the Signal Training School in Burma Camp on Tuesday, 16 September 2025.

The course, sponsored by an European Union delegation led by the Course Director, Commander Ella Van Den Heuvel, brings together 30 participants from various units of the Ghana Army.

Colonel Agboado explained that the three-day course aims to equip participants with knowledge, analytical tools, and operational frameworks to apply gender-sensitive approaches across combat, peacekeeping, and disaster response missions.

He congratulated the participants on their selection and encouraged them to engage actively in discussions, practical exercises, and shared learning experiences to enhance their understanding of how integrating gender perspectives improves both the effectiveness and legitimacy of military operations.

Noting the short duration of the course, Colonel Agboado urged the trainees to approach it with openness and curiosity, share experiences, ask questions, challenge assumptions, and integrate gender perspectives into their operational planning. He emphasized that this integration is essential for strategic effectiveness, improved intelligence, and better mission outcomes, especially in protecting civilians.

Colonel Agboado also reinforced the strong support of the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, for such training initiatives and reminded participants to maintain discipline and safety throughout the course. He commended the Army G7 Branch staff and the Gender Advisor at Army Headquarters for facilitating the course and thanked the Signal Training School for hosting the event.

In his remarks, Mr. Ansgar Glatze, representative of the European Union Military Attaché, highlighted the ongoing support from the EU, including the donation of equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Operations. He described the Gender Perspective in Combat Operations Course as part of the continuous effort to build troop capacity and strengthen the relationship between the Ghana Army and European partners.
