A high-powered delegation led by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and including Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, HE Kamina Johnson Smith, visited the Luana Camp on Sunday 25 January 2026, where Engineering contingents from Ghana, Jamaica and Guyana are currently deployed.
Other members of the Ghanaian delegation comprised the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon Ernest Brogya Genfi; the Chief of the Army Staff, Maj Gen Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu; and Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Caribbean, Mr Kwasi Kyei Darkwah.
The visit aimed to obtain first-hand information on the operations, progress of work, and the general welfare of Ghanaian troops deployed as part of the multinational humanitarian response following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
At the Luana Camp, the Commander of the Ghana Engineering Reconstruction Team, Colonel Emmanuel Asia, delivered a comprehensive operational briefing to the delegation, outlining the scope of work undertaken, achievements to date, challenges encountered, and projections for the remaining phases of the reconstruction effort.
The delegation subsequently toured several project sites being executed by the Ghana Engineering Reconstruction Team, where personnel are actively rebuilding and rehabilitating homes for affected residents. The work forms part of ongoing humanitarian interventions to support communities whose livelihoods were severely affected by the hurricane.
As part of support for the reconstruction efforts, the Ghana Engineer Reconstruction Team will hand over all tools and equipment to the Jamaican Defence Force (JDF) Engineers before returning to Ghana.
Ghana’s Deputy Defence Minister, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, presented engineering equipment and stores to the JDF through Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister, to support ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Both Foreign Ministers commended the engineering teams for their professionalism, resilience, and collaborative spirit, noting that the joint efforts of Ghana, Jamaica, and Guyana underscore strong regional cooperation and a shared commitment to humanitarian service.
The visit reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to international humanitarian assistance and further strengthened bilateral relations among the participating countries, particularly in the Caribbean region.
