6 Infantry Battalion (6 Bn) successfully held a handing and taking over ceremony between Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Jerry Yao Agbeko Ankuyi and Lt Col Edward Kwame Anane Lumor on Friday 23 January 2026, at the Collins Parade Square, Kamina Barracks, Tamale. The colourful event attracted a diverse crowd of military personnel and civilians from across the country to witness the change in command.
The Guest of Honour, Major General (Maj Gen) Matthew Essien (Rtd), in his address, lauded Lt Col Ankuyi for his selfless and professional tenure. He particularly commended the immediate past Commanding Officer for adroitly handling volatile chieftaincy disputes in his area of operational responsibility and for steadfastly upholding military integrity during the recent general elections.
In welcoming Lt Col Lumor, Maj Gen Essien (Rtd) expressed absolute confidence in the incoming Commanding Officer’s capabilities, reminding the assembled troops that military leadership is an essential management function that instils purpose and motivation in high-pressure, high-consequence environments.
Lt Col Ankuyi, in his remarks, described his four-and-a-half-year tenure as a heavenly assignment defined by sacrifice, professional integrity and divine favour. He emphasised that commanding an infantry battalion in such a sensitive geographical theatre demands a profound degree of emotional intelligence, wisdom and sound judgement, extending far beyond mere tactical proficiency.
Lt Col Ankuyi characterised his journey as a post-command, having led the unit as Commander Rear in 2021 before his formal appointment as Commanding Officer. He noted that under his stewardship, 6 Bn strove to remain an agile, motivated and efficient force.
He remained resolute in upholding the stringent disciplinary standards set during his tenure, and he reminded the younger ranks that "the Army is not a job; it is a service." Lt Col Ankuyi concluded by expressing his deep-seated gratitude to the Military High Command, his mentors and the unit's personnel.
A highlight of the day’s proceedings was the formal commissioning of the unit’s newly constructed Arch and Memorial Garden. These architectural milestones serve as enduring symbols of the battalion’s strength and its renewed vision under evolving leadership. The inauguration of these structures added a sense of lasting legacy to the occasion, standing as a proud gateway for all who serve within the Kamina Barracks.
Key among the dignitaries who graced the occasion were the Northern and Savannah Regional Ministers, Honourable Ali Adolf John and Honourable Salisu Be-Awuribe respectively; the Base Commander, Air Force Base Tamale, who also serves as the 6 Garrison Commander, Air Commodore Nana Adu-Gyamfi; General Officer Commanding Northern Command, Brigadier General Franklyn Worlanyo Agbebo; Deputy Chief Staff Officer Operations and Training at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General William Kwabiah; Revered Chiefs, REGSEC members, and Municipal and District Chief Executives.
