Malawian Delegation Visits Army Headquarters for Regional Security Insights

A 28-member delegation from the Malawi Defence Force Senior Command and Staff College, led by Malawi Defence Advisor to Ghana Brigadier General Chrispin Robert Phiri and Chief Instructor, Colonel Alfred Luciano Matambo, visited the Ghana Army Headquarters on Monday, 6 October 2025, for a study tour.

 

The delegation which included officers from Malawi, Zambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Botswana, Tanzania, and Uganda, aimed to learn about the Ghana Army’s role in countering cross-border security threats.

 

Deputy Chief Staff Officer ( Operations and Training) at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General William Kwabiah, welcomed the group on behalf of the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu.

He highlighted the importance of strengthening management and combating transnational organized crime to promote regional security and development, noting this was the focus of the Malawian delegation’s research.

 

He also made reference to Ghana Army’s participation in numerous multinational joint task force operations and exercises since 2017 in West Africa and the Sahel, including Operation KOUDANLGOU involving Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria, Niger, and Togo. Additionally, he mentioned domestic operations such as Operation HUNTER, Operation SIT DOWN LOOK Operation COW LEG, Operation MOTHERLAND, and Operation CONQUERED FIST.

 

Colonel Richard, Chief G3 (Operations) at the Army Headquarters, delivered a presentation on “The Role of the Ghana Army in Countering Cross-Border Security Threats.” He explained that cross-border security threats arise from activities that cross national boundaries, jeopardizing state authority and citizens.

These threats include the movement of terrorists, illegal migrants, and the trafficking of illicit goods such as drugs, weapons, and counterfeit products. He also discussed challenges confronting border security operations and Ghana Army’s efforts to address them.

 

In response, Colonel Alfred Luciano Matambo, on behalf of the delegation, presented medals and gifts to Brigadier General William Kwabiah, expressing sincere gratitude to the Chief of the Army Staff and personnel of the Ghana Army for sharing valuable knowledge to support their future work.
