Retired Sergeant Majors Call on COAS

A seven-member delegation from the Retired Sergeant Majors’ Association, led by their president, Ex Master Warrant Officer (Ex MWO) Moses Frempah, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, at the Army Headquarters in Burma Camp.

In his remarks, Ex MWO Frempah described the visit as a homecoming and expressed gratitude for the warm reception and the honour of meeting with the COAS. He conveyed the compliments of the Association’s members and extended congratulations to all newly appointed Service Chiefs, wishing them well in their roles.

Ex MWO Frempah emphasized the importance of reminding the Command of the association’s presence and provided an update on its current status. He stated that the association is dedicated to promoting the welfare and comfort of its members and their families as they transition into retirement from the profession they dearly love.

He also raised several concerns affecting the association, including health service challenges at the 37 Military Hospital, the need for a social center to serve as both office and lodge for retirees, as well as matters related to troop motivation and improved conditions of service to boost morale of soldiers.

Despite their retired status, Ex MWO Frempah assured the COAS of the association’s steadfast loyalty and readiness to support various units and commands by sharing their wealth of past experience. He praised Major General Gbetanu’s leadership style, commending his vibrant service spanning over three decades.

In his response, the COAS thanked the delegation for their thoughtful submissions, words of encouragement, and goodwill. He noted his prior interactions with many members and acknowledged the association’s initiative in creating a unified platform for retired Sergeant Majors.

He emphasized that this platform enables the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to engage in meaningful discussions and make informed decisions for the benefit of the Ghana Army and the GAF as a whole.

Major General Gbetanu echoed his vision for development through Regimental structures and encouraged the delegation to serve as advocates whenever they engage with active soldiers. He informed them that the Military High Command had begun reviewing some of the concerns raised, with recommendations underway to improve conditions for pensioners. He assured the delegation of ongoing healthy and constructive engagement to enhance the association’s activities.

As a gesture of support, the COAS presented the association with an undisclosed financial contribution to support its operations. The delegation was also honoured with customized Ghana Army Kente Stoles. In return, Ex MWO Frempah also presented the COAS with a customized plaque.
