Southern Command Holds Inter-Unit Drill Competition

Headquarters Southern Command has successfully conducted an Inter-Unit Drill Competition for units under command and allied formations at Bale Baz Square, Arakan Barracks, on Monday, 29 December 2025.The competition formed part of the Command’s continuous training and capacity-building programme aimed at enhancing discipline, precision, and operational readiness among troops. It also aligns with the broader objective of maintaining a highly disciplined, motivated, and professional force capable of meeting both current and future operational demands.Participating contingents were drawn from Camp Southern Command, 1 Infantry Battalion, 2 Infantry Battalion, and 5 Infantry Battalion. Other competing units included 153 Armoured Regiment, 48 Engineer Regiment, 64 Infantry Regiment, and 66 Artillery Regiment. All units displayed a high level of drill proficiency, teamwork, and effective command and control throughout the competition.The contingents demonstrated smartness, coordination, alertness, and strict adherence to established military standards as they executed slow and quick time marches, rifle exercises, sentry drills, and other drill movements. These displays reflected the professionalism of personnel within Southern Command and the Ghana Army as a whole.Addressing participants at the event, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, Brigadier General Isaac Nicholas Paintsil, underscored that the High Command places great importance on turnout, bearing, sword, foot, and rifle drills, as well as the general smartness of all ranks at all times. He noted that drill competitions remain an essential tool for instilling discipline, esprit de corps, and unity among troops.The GOC further emphasized that command recognizes drill as the bedrock of discipline in the Ghana Armed Forces, adding that sustained engagement in drill activities contributes significantly to reducing acts of indiscipline among personnel.Judges assessed the participating units based on turnout, precision of movement, timing, command voice, and overall presentation. At the end of the competition, 48 Engineer Regiment emerged winners with 825 points out of a possible 895. 153 Armoured Regiment and 66 Artillery Regiment placed first and second runners-up respectively.The remaining positions were taken by 1 Infantry Regiment in fourth place, Camp Southern Command in fifth, 5 Infantry Regiment in sixth, 2 Infantry Regiment in seventh, and 64 Infantry Regiment in eighth position.
