UK Defence Attache to Ghana Visits COAS

Defence Attache at the UK High Commission in Ghana, Naval Commander Richard Walters paid a visit to the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, at the Army Headquarters in Burma Camp on Tuesday, 15 April 2025.

The purpose of the visit was to congratulate the COAS on his appointment and discuss security issues and training packages to address the recent rising security threats. They also discussed matters of mutual interest to both forces.

In further development, Commander Richard Walters hinted at an upcoming visit by Staff College students from the UK. He viewed this as an opportunity for their students to learn firsthand in Ghana and was pleased with the level of input being offered. He acknowledged the healthy relationship between both forces and looked forward to more collaboration to strengthen training packages at all levels.

In response, the COAS assured of his presence during the visit, which would be an interesting opportunity to engage with the students and share perspectives on pertinent challenges and issues beyond security within the African context.

He further expressed appreciation to the UK Government for their unwavering support and defence cooperation which have helped in sustaining the country’s peace and security. He hoped for more future collaborations to increase troop efficiency, services, and engineering across all three services of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for swift operations.

As a token of appreciation for the visit, the COAS presented Commander Walters with a plaque and a customized Ghana Army Kente Stole.
