COAS Holds Durbar with UNMISS GHANBATT 13

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, held a durbar with personnel of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) GHANBATT 13 on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, at Burma Hall, Burma Camp. The meeting aimed to discuss recent developments concerning the delayed rotation of troops.Major General Gbetanu addressed key issues affecting Ghana’s peacekeeping operations, particularly the United Nations Headquarters’ decision to reduce the number of personnel deployed on missions — including military, police, and civilian components. He described the reduction and logistical challenges as concerning, stressing that it was inappropriate to deploy troops for peacekeeping operations without adequate feeding and welfare arrangements. The COAS assured the troops that personnel due for retirement from the 1995 and 1996 year groups would not be removed from the mission roster. He, however, indicated that those who may be replaced would be considered for subsequent deployments. He further advised all personnel to remain disciplined, manage their resources wisely, and avoid any conduct that could tarnish the image of the Ghana Army.Major General Gbetanu revealed that the United Nations had reduced the strength of GHANBATT 13 from 700 to 217 personnel, noting that the decision was part of a broader restructuring by UNMISS.Present at the durbar were the Chief Staff Officer at Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Lloyd Ator, Deputy Chief Staff Officer (Operations and Training), Brigadier General William Kwabiah and the Chief G3 (Peace Support Operations), Colonel Ernest Nanbigni.
