HQ Northern Command Opens Training on Prevention of Recruitment and use of Children in Armed Conflict

The Headquarters Northern Command has commenced a five 5- day Pre-Deployment Training for the Prevention of Recruitment and Use of Children in Armed Conflict Basic Course 2025.

The course which was opened on Monday 8 December 2025, at Headquarters Northern Command is designed to train participants to have better understanding of the prevention of child recruitment, support for vulnerable children and their communities, and advocacy for stronger policies and effective enforcement.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command Brigadier General Worlanyo Agbebo, the Command Operations Officer, Colonel John Yaw Kwarteng stated that, the security landscape in the Northern Command’s Area of Operational Responsibility continues to evolve with threat that seek not only to destabilise the communities but break their social fabric.

Violent extremist groups often use children as tools for their destructive aims, hence the need for the pre-deployment training for the Prevention of Recruitment and Use of Children in Armed Conflict.

He added that, our long standing collaboration with the Dallaire Institute has been instrumental in strengthening the competencies required to recognize early indicators of child recruitment, respond ethically under operational pressure and support communities in building resilience. He encouraged participants to engage actively in the course, share ideas and support one another to make the training a success. He also urged all instructors and facilitators to give out their utmost best to ensure a successful course.

The Project Director of the Dallaire Institute, Mr Mukendi Arsene Tshidimu expressed his gratitude to the Canadian government for sustaining their actions and for funding this initiative. He also expressed his appreciation to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the GOC for giving them the opportunity to train the Soldier, assuring GAF of more of such training in the future.
