The 11 Mechanized Infantry Battalion, Home of Hawks has held its first-ever annual West African Soldiers’ Social Activities (WASSA) on Friday 17 January 2025.
The event which took place at the Battalion's Headquarters in Bolga was also used to commission a newly built Quarter Guard for the Unit. Several fun activities were undertaken to mark the day. Additionally, awards were given to deserving soldiers and Defence Civilian Staff.
Delivering his address, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central and Majority leader in the Ninth Parliament of Ghana, who was the Guest of Honour said that, “for the sacrifices of soldiers in Bawku and the honour done me, I will personally be an advocate for the improvement of military infrastructure within the Region”. He lauded the Military High Command for the great infrastructural work done so far and praised the soldiers of 11 Mechanised Battalion as part of the Election Joint Task Force for ensuring one of the most peaceful elections in Bawku.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command, Brig Gen Frank Nartey Tei in his remarks stated that owing to the discipline and dedication of soldiers in the Command, the entire Northern Sector of the country remained peaceful during the 2024 General Elections. He applauded soldiers of the Command for their hard work. He further thanked the Guest of Honour on behalf of the Unit for his enormous support and for gracing the occasion with his presence.
In his welcome address, the Commander Rear of 11 Mechanised Infantry Battalion, Lt Col Kakra Sasu-Antwi extolled the good work of the Commanding Officers before him. He also on behalf of the Military High Command, thanked soldiers for their service to the nation. He said, “your selfless sacrifices, dedication and devotion to your country will forever be celebrated by many generations to come.”
Key personalities present at the function were the CO, 12 Mechanized Infantry Battalion, Lt Col Frederick Amankwah, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Raymond Adofiem, Regional Commander, National Intelligence Bureau, Mr Emmanuel Owusu and the Bolgatanga Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle David Amankwah.
