2BN Commemorates 80th Anniversary of Battle of Myohaung

The 2 Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Army has commemorated the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Myohaung and Drum-head Service on Thursday 23 January 2025 at Apambire Parade Square, Myohaung Barracks, Apremdo.

The Anniversary of the Battle of Myohaung is an annual event set aside to honour the Royal West African Frontier Forces who lost their lives in World War 2. Their sacrifices culminated in the largest formations namely, the 81st and 82nd Divisions emerging victorious in the battlefield on 23 January 1945 in Myohaung which was then the ancient capital of the Arkanese Kings.

Delivering his speech, the Guest of Honour, Brigadier General Alhassan Abu (Rtd) said that, the Battle of Myohaung was a significant military engagement during the Second World War. He added that the victory of the 81st West African Division over the Japanese was crucial in neutralising the myth of their invincibility and formidability, and this he added, formed the basis for the annual celebration of the battle of Myohaung.

He noted that the occasion was also in remembrance of the sacrifices made by soldiers and the personnel of other security services, particularly those who worked day and night to safeguard the safety and security of the nation. Brigadier General Abu said that Ghana had been an epitome of democracy for decades and described as one of the peaceful countries in the West African Sub-Region.

He said that was made manifest in the just ended Presidential and Parliamentary elections held on 7 December 2024, hence, he attributed the success to the hard work and professionalism of men and women of the security services in the country. He was of the view that, the security agencies must further enhance their collaborative effort in order to safeguard the boarders of the country in the era of global insecurity.

He acknowledged the esteemed veterans whose efforts had paved the way for today's peace and democracy; and added that they were the existing symbolism of the Battle of Myohaung. Brigadier General Abu used the opportunity to advise the youth against sedentary lifestyles which gave way for various ailments. He implored them to practise healthy lifestyles by consuming healthy diets and exercising regularly in order to remain robust, dynamic and healthy.

He commended the Military High Command, Commanding Officer and personnel of 2BN as well as the 2 Garrison for successfully organising the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Myohaung and for inviting him to grace the occasion.

Dignitaries present at the occasion were the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Commodore Emmanuel Ayensu Kwafo, Flag Officer Commanding Naval Logistics Command, Commodore Eric Osei, Flag Officer Fleet, Commodore Stephen Ayelazono, Executive Director, Veterans Administration Ghana, Captain Ben Edmund Duah ( Rtd); Treasurer General of World Veterans Federation in Switzerland (Geneva), Major Derek Oduro (Rtd), Commander Flying Group, Air Force Base Takoradi, Group Captain SY Agbenyefia; Commanding Officer, Air Force Recruit Training School, Wing Commander Newman Suhuba Naab, Senior Officers, Representatives of Heads of Security Services and some Traditional Leaders.
