6 Infantry Battalion Celebrates End-Of-Year WASSA

The 6 Infantry Battalion has celebrated its annual West African Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA) to climax their end-of-2024 activities at Kamina Barracks, Tamale in the Northern Region.

The event which took place on Friday 21 February, 2025 brought together Officers, Soldiers, families and friends to celebrate and appreciate collective achievements of the Unit over the year with the Guest of Honour being the General Officer Commanding Northern Command (GOC), Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Frank Nartey Tei.

The Guest of Honour in an address, commended the Commanding Officer (CO) 6Bn, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Jerry Yao Ankuyi, for his good leadership that had ensured cooperation and cohesion among personnel of the Unit. He applauded all personnel of the Battalion for staying united and fulfilling their mandate.

He praised them for their exceptional performance in the discharge of their duties to ensure that the Unit’s Area of Responsibility remains safe and secured. He also commended the Unit for supporting the Police and other security services in ensuring peace and security during and after the general elections in the Northern Sector. 

Brig Gen FN Tei urged the troops to continue striving for greater achievements by working together to build on the success of 2024, setting new benchmarks for operational excellence and upholding the values that make the Ghana Armed Forces one of the finest military institutions in the world. The Commanding Officer Lt Col Jerry Yao Ankuyi expressed his gratitude to the Military High Command, the GOC and the 6 Garrison Commander for their support, and guidance given to the Unit during the period.

He stated that, with the support of the Military High Command and his immediate superiors, the Unit had achieved a lot within the period. Some of these achievements among others included, the constructions of fence-wall around the barracks, 4 training squad sheds for troops, 100 bed capacity accommodation units for young soldiers (Phase 1 completed, Phase 2 under construction), facelift of the Bn HQ, Officers and Junior Rank Mess.

 He added that, the Unit through its internally generated fund had acquired a 30-seater capacity Nissan Bus to be used as Welfare Bus to enhance the transportation of troops. The CO commended Officers, Soldiers and Defence Civilian Staff of the Unit for their professionalism and selfless dedication to duty and urged them to remain committed and uphold the spirit of teamwork. He urged them to combine efforts and continue working together to achieve the unit’s set goals and objectives.

Other activities which took place during the event included, Honouring the former 6Bn Regimental Sergeant Major, Late Ex WOI Andrew Yaw Collins by naming the Battalion Parade Square after him, Dressing Competition as well as  presentation of awards to some soldiers.

Present at the event were the 6 Garrison Commander and Base Commander Air Force Base Tamale, Air Commodore Joshua Mensah-Larkai, Senior Officers, Commanding Officers, Officers, Heads of sister Security Services in the Northern Region, Soldiers, Defence Civilian Staff, traditional rulers, families, and friends of the Battalion.
