COAS Commissions New Projects at Army Special Operations Brigade Headquarters

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, commissioned new projects and received donated logistics from the Danish Military Assistance Group (MAG) on Monday, 12 May 2025, at the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB) Headquarters, Gondar Barracks.

The projects commissioned included a dog kennel and the Danish Liaison Office. The Danish MAG also donated a Toyota Hiace mini bus, eight DGI Mavic 3 thermal RGB drones, and personal protective equipment such as ballistic helmets, plate carriers, and tactical gear to enhance operational effectiveness against evolving security threats.

Commander of the Danish Special Operations Command, Colonel Nicolai Stahlfest Moller, expressed gratitude for the warm reception in Ghana and emphasized the importance of friendship in building strong partnerships. He thanked the COAS for ongoing support and looked forward to future cooperation, especially in developing Ghana’s Army Special Forces. He highlighted Denmark’s approach of building effective, low-level, bottom-up relationships in special forces cooperation worldwide and praised the joint efforts between Denmark, Austria, and Ghana as a model for future collaboration.

Colonel Moller reflected on the longstanding relationship between Denmark and Ghana, now expanding into military cooperation. He contrasted the ongoing war in Europe near Denmark with the relatively peaceful situation in West Africa, noting simmering conflicts. He expressed hope that strengthening Ghana’s Armed Forces, particularly the Special Operations Brigade, would help maintain peace and prevent conflict in Ghana.

COAS in his remarks said the fully funded interventions by Danish partners demonstrate the strategic partnership with Denmark, rooted in a shared commitment to counterterrorism and regional peace. He noted that this collaboration goes beyond a bilateral agreement, representing a united stand against terrorism destabilizing communities from the Sahel to the Gulf of Guinea.

He praised the foundational work of the Brigade’s leadership, which has positioned the ASOB as a critical land force within Ghana’s military framework. He mentioned that the  partnership had enhanced the Brigade’s elite capabilities and aligned Ghana’s Armed Forces with sub-regional and international security frameworks. He expressed deep gratitude to the Danish MAG for their unwavering support and acknowledged Unique Delecom Limited for constructing the new facilities.

COAS charged the Army Special Operations Brigade personnel to use these assets professionally to protect the nation, disrupt potential terrorist threats, and honour the trust placed in them by their Danish partners.

The dog kennel, designed to house six Special Operations dogs donated by Austria, will empower the kennel units to enhance detection, search, and counterterrorism operations. The eight advanced drones, supported by Danish-led training, will transform intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, enabling precise action against terrorist threats across diverse terrains. The personal protective equipment will safeguard operators confronting high-risk threats. The Danish Liaison Office will serve as a strategic hub for real-time coordination and planning to strengthen joint efforts.
