COAS Honoured With 68 Medals for Outstanding Army Sports Excellence

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona has been honoured with a total of 68 medals won by the Army Sports teams from sporting events of the year 2023/2024, on Thursday, 28 June 2024.

The awards, which were presented at a ceremony held in honour of the sports teams at the forecourt of the Army Headquarters, included a remarkable haul of 31 gold medals, 24 silver medals, and 13 bronze medals, highlighting the exceptional performances of the men and women of the Army sports teams. The highlight of the day, was the presentation of a brand new Renault Saloon Car by Premier Motors of Ghana, earned by the Army Boxing team.

The accolades were garnered from prestigious events such as the National Athletics Open Championship, WINA BIG Volleyball Tournament, the Greater Accra Regional Handball Championship, and The West Africa Table Tennis Championship. Others were, the 13th All African Games held in Ghana, the Confederation of African Athletics Region 2 Senior Championship, Ghana’s Women FA Championship and 2023 Ghana’s Professional Boxing League.

Speaking at the event, COAS expressed gratitude to the Army sports teams for their outstanding performances that have elevated both the flag of Ghana and the Ghana Army. He attributed these successes to strategic interventions by the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lt Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah, supported by senior officers, soldiers, and civilian staff of the Army Headquarters.

Major General Onwona further congratulated the teams on their achievements and encouraged them to continue bringing pride to the Ghana Army, promising to address any challenges they face to ensure continued success in future seasons.

COAS also extended appreciation to various dignitaries and organizations for their unwavering support and contributions to the Army sports teams. These included the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif; the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, His Excellency Ambassador Maher Kheir; President of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Mr. Abraham Kotei Nee Quaye; President of the Ghana Football Association, Mr Edwin Simeon Kurt Okraku  amongst others.

On his part, the Dean of Diplomatic Corps, His Excellency Ambassador Maher Kheir  extended congratulations to the Ghana Army Sports teams for their comprehensive successes across various disciplines. He expressed appreciation for the outstanding achievements of the teams, acknowledging their dedication and skills in securing victories across multiple disciplines.

Ambassador Kheir commended the Army hierarchy for their support and leadership in fostering an environment conducive to sporting excellence and encouraged the teams to build upon their achievements and strive for greater success in future competitions. He highlighted the importance of sports in promoting camaraderie, discipline, and national pride among military personnel.

Ambassador Kheir concluded his remarks by reaffirming his support for the Ghana Army Sports teams and their ongoing contributions to national sports excellence.
