The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has received 14 Puma M36 Mk3 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) from the United States on Thursday, 8 May 2025 at Burma Camp’s 153 Armoured Regiment Square.
The US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer, described the handover as a milestone in the US-Ghana security cooperation, emphasizing the APCs’ role in strengthening Ghana’s border security and regional stability. Valued at over $6 million, the vehicles are designed to enhance troop protection, mobility, and effectiveness in counter-terrorism and internal security operations.
Ambassador Palmer underscored the complexity of today’s security challenges, stressing that no country can address them alone. She praised Ghana’s role as an exporter of peace and commended the Ghana Armed Forces for their readiness, professionalism, and commitment to civilian rule and international peacekeeping.
She assured of training packages for soldiers to ensure the vehicles’ safe and effective use and sincerely thanked Ghana for their partnership with the United States.
The Minister for Defence, Dr (Med) Edward Kofi Omane Boamah in his remarks, expressed gratitude for the donation, calling it a testament to the enduring partnership between the two countries and a boost to the operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces. On behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, HE John Dramani Mahama, he expressed profound gratitude to the US Government and partners from the US Embassy and the United States Africa Command for this generous and strategic gesture.
He also commended the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces for their professionalism and tireless commitment to excellence in service, expressing hope that this gesture would further empower them to carry out their duties with greater confidence and safety.
Dr (Med) Omane Boamah emphasized that the occasion was not only a symbol of the enduring partnership between the two countries but also a tangible expression of their shared commitment to peace, stability, and security within Ghana and across the West African subregion. He further highlighted that the vehicles would not only be assets for national defense but also instruments for regional peace and global solidarity.
The Puma M36 Mk3 APC is a four wheel drive, mine resistant, and ambush-protected vehicle capable of carrying up to 12 personnel. Its V-shaped hull offers robust protection against mines and improvised explosive devices, making it suitable for both military and humanitarian missions in high-threat environments.
