The Ambassador of the State of Israel to Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone,
His Excellency Roey Gilad met with the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Army Headquarters in Burma Camp.
Accompanied by the Defence Attaché to Africa, Colonel Aviezer Segal, and his Deputy, Major Hod Bass, Ambassador Gilad expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and highlighted the long-standing bilateral relationship between Israel and Ghana. He acknowledged the significant contributions of Ghana Armed Forces personnel in peacekeeping efforts, particularly in Lebanon.
A comprehensive brief on the current situations in Israel and the defense mechanisms employed in conflict zones such as Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria was discussed. Ambassador Gilad looked forward to developing more defense strategies to address the security challenges faced by both regions.
In response, Lieutenant General Onwona acknowledged the strong defense cooperation between Ghana and Israel, citing the neutral relationship between Israel and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a model worth emulating. He emphasized that while Ghana remains peaceful, the fight against terrorism is a global concern, and neighboring countries have been affected. Lieutenant General Onwona believes that Ghana can learn from Israel's capabilities to enhance its readiness.
He also believes that the partnership between the two nations is expected to foster knowledge, intelligence sharing, capacity building and strengthened relationships for mutual benefits. Lieutenant General Onwona also thanked Ambassador Gilad for ensuring the safety of Ghanaian troops in Lebanon, despite ongoing conflict impacts and ceasefire negotiations.
As a token of appreciation, Lieutenant General Onwona presented Colonel Aviezer Segal with a Kente stole and plaque. On the other hand, he also presented a prototype of the Jerusalem cup.
