Jamaican Prime Minister Commends Ghanaian Troops During Site Visit to St Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica

The Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, visited Middle Quarters in St. Elizabeth Parish on Friday 16 January 2026. He toured sections of Westmoreland, where communities affected by Hurricane Melissa have benefited from humanitarian work by the Ghana Engineering Reconstruction Team, the Guyana Defence Force and the Jamaica Defence Force.

 

During the visit, the Prime Minister inspected roofing and structural rehabilitation works being carried out by the Ghanaian troops and expressed his profound appreciation to the Government and people of Ghana for their timely support. He commended the professionalism, commitment, and technical expertise of the Ghanaian engineers, noting that their intervention has brought relief and renewed hope to families.

 

The Prime Minister also interacted with some residents of Middle Quarters whose homes had been repaired and listened to their experiences. The residents were delighted with the work being done by the Ghanaian troops and commended the Government of Ghana. 

 

Commander of the Ghana Engineering Reconstruction Team, Colonel Emmanuel Asia, on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Ghana Armed Forces, reaffirmed Ghana’s solidarity with Jamaica. He pledged the team’s full support for the reconstruction efforts. He assured the people of Jamaica that the soldiers remain poised and determined to contribute their quota to rebuilding homes and restoring affected communities in St. Elizabeth Parish.

 

Colonel Asia further emphasised that the deployment reflects the strong bilateral relations between Ghana and Jamaica, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to humanitarian assistance, regional cooperation, and shared resilience in times of adversity.

 

Joining the Prime Minister on the tour were the Support Brigade Commander, Brigadier O’Neil Bogle; the Engineer Task Force Commander, Major Daniel Khan; and other members of the Jamaica Defence Force.
