The Northern Command of the Ghana Army has conducted a gender sensitisation and counselling outreach programme across the Upper East Region from Tuesday 10 March to Thursday 12 March 2026. The three-day programme, spearheaded by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command, Brigadier General Franklyn Worlanyo Kwasi Agbebo, sought to align frontline operations with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) gender policy and to provide essential psychological support and counselling sessions to troops deployed in high-pressure border zones.
Led by the Command Gender Advisor, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Samuel Twumasi, the team, comprising the Command Chaplain, Reverend Father Captain Dominic Prince Yeboah; Command Legal Officer, Mr Frank Kofi Agbontor; and psychologist, Mr Daniel Kyeremeh, engaged troops at the Headquarters 11 Mechanised Battalion, Bolgatanga, Joint Task Force Headquarters Bawku, and Headquarters 12 Mechanised Battalion, Sandema.
The initiative aimed to dismantle entrenched cultural stereotypes in favour of professional meritocracy. The team advocated for the seamless integration of female personnel into operational roles, and underscored a firm regulatory framework, making it clear that a harassment-free environment is both a legal requirement and a disciplinary necessity. By framing gender equity as a fundamental aspect of military comradeship and addressing the psychological impact of unconscious bias, the team underscored that a modern, disciplined force is predicated on individual capability and statutory respect.
Addressing the unique challenges of the region, Lt Col Twumasi emphasised that the harsh terrains and demanding conditions faced by troops in Bawku and the surrounding border areas necessitate consistent moral and psychological sustenance. The personnel expressed their gratitude to the GOC for prioritising their mental health, noting that such interventions are vital for maintaining morale in volatile environments.
As troops reaffirmed their unyielding loyalty, the outreach concluded as a testament to the GOC Northern Command’s commitment to improving professionalism among troops under his command in line with the Chief of the Army Staff’s vision for the Ghana Army.
