16 Artillery Brigade Holds Flag Raising Ceremony

A Flag Lowering and Raising Ceremony has been held to officially welcome the 16 Artillery Brigade of the Ghana Army. The ceremony was held at the Obeng Square of the 66 Artillery Regiment, Volta Barracks, Ho on Thursday, 27 February 2025.

The Brigade has Brig Gen Selorm Amengor as the Brigade Commander and Col George Dottey as the Deputy Commander. The 16 Artillery Brigade comprises 66 Artillery Regiment commanded by Lt Col Jalali Din Ibrahim, 67 Artillery Regiment commanded by Lt Col Said Suraj, 68 Artillery Regiment commanded by Lt Col Larry Kwesi Boateng and Lt Col Patrick Atuiri commanding the Artillery Training School. The Brigade Headquarters is situated at Akoefe in Ho.

In his opening remarks, the Brigade Commander, Brig Gen Selorm Amengor, expressed his gratitude to the Chief of the Army Staff, the Ghana Artillery Officers Association and Old Gunners Association for their unwavering support, guidance and inspiration. He continued that their hard work and commitment was what paved way for this new chapter in the history of the Ghana Army.

In a speech delivered by the Guest of Honour, the General Officer Commanding Southern Command Brig Gen Samuel Yeboah Asare, he highlighted the importance of Flag Raising ceremony and it's symbolism, serving as a powerful symbol of unity, patriotism and organizational cohesion. He added that, this historic ceremony also promotes esprit de corps and solidarity among personnel of the Brigade by creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose which exists in the corps which serves as a rallying point to motivate troops of the Brigade to strive to achieve success.

He also indicated that the important and vital contribution of greater and responsive fire power, together with other benefits to the morale and combat efficiency of the fighting troops made it necessary for the existing 66 Artillery Regiment to be expanded to a Brigade. He further stated that the Brigade has 3 field Artillery Regiments and a training school, hence the need to raise its flag for the necessary recognition. He added that soon, the Air Defence component would also form another layer of defence for critical National infrastructure.

Brig Gen Samuel Yeboah Asare disclosed that the Military High Command was committed to resourcing the Brigade to perform its duties both in peace and war. He assured the Brigade Commander that with the formation of the 67 and 68 Artillery Regiments located in the central and northern parts of the country, plans are far advanced to procure modern and appropriate weapons and equipment to resource the Brigade to post officers and men to fill existing vacancies. He charged the Brigade Commander, Officers, Soldiers and Defence Civilian Staff to work assiduously towards fulfilling their duties as stated in the constitution of Ghana.

 

The ceremony was graced by the Volta Regional Minister Hon James Gunu, Brig Gen Nicholas Kporku (Rtd), Brig Gen Stephen Parbey, Commander Army Training Command, Brig Gen Ben Gah, Commander 15 Armoured Brigade, Brig Gen Richard Kinney, Commander 14 Engr Brigade, Brig Gen Augustine Asiedu, Director General International Peace Support Operations, Col Kingsley Affrifah, Chief G7(Trg) Army HQ, Col Ben Boamah, Command Operations Officer ( COO) Southern Command, Col Edward Sarpong Appiah, Gender Advisor, GHQ(CE), Col George Dottey, Deputy Commander 16 Brigade among other Senior Officers and Personnel.
